I had forgotten how hard it is.
Maybe it's like giving birth? Your brain goes back and smooths over all the hair-pulling and re-writing and the draft that starts with, "As you know, Bob . . ."?
At any rate, I am pleased with the first thousand words of Skywatch and displeased with the second 1,500. The first thousand words (which I spent a ridiculously long time on compared to my average writing rate) work well, I think, get us into the characters and some of the world before the second scene plunges us into plot and exposition. The problem, of course, is that I deliberately plotted out room in this scene for showing off my really awesome flying steampunk city, and now it reads like I'm Exposition Woman: All the info, none of the fun!
Blargh. I think I'm going to have to go back and re-write the exposition-heavy chunks, at least. I need to be more in Eshe's head and less looking out of her eyes, if that makes sense. Sensory detail is lovely, but not at the expense of character, and its density is excessive for a book I intend to be ~50k words.
